“Just Stop Doing What Hurts”… is bullshit

Have you ever gone to see a healthcare provider with an injury and they say, “Just stop doing what hurts”.

I hate to hear this, because it’s not feasible for you. These providers likely only have a few minutes to fit you in their schedule, and don’t have the time time to actually help, so that’s what they say to quickly move on to their next client. It’s not their fault, it’s the system they work in.

But today, for most injuries, rehab best practices are to find movement that works for you. You deserve a provider that can help you modify your activities to keep doing what you love. You should have someone who takes the time to listen to you. And not just what hurts, but what your motivation and goals are. Someone to get to the root cause of your problems instead of just putting a band-aid on it.

That’s what we do at Formation. We know the system is broken, so we left it. Because you deserve someone who is going to work their ass off to figure out how to modify your activities, while giving you a plan to heal as soon as possible. So the next time you hear someone say, “Just stop doing what hurts”, ask for a better answer. And if they don’t have one, reach out to us.
