“I’ll Just Walk More for My Bones”… Isn’t Enough
“I don’t need to lift weights. I walk. That’s enough for my bones.”
I get it. It’s confusing. Walking feels healthy. It’s easy to stick with. It counts as exercise. Up until not long ago, they were encouraging women not to lift weights. Guess what. Science catches up. We learn what we used to do isn’t how it should always be done.
if you’re a woman between 35-55, walking alone is not enough to protect your bone density
Here’s what’s happening.
In your mid-30s, bone density slowly starts to decline.
When hormones shift (perimenopause and menopause anyone?), that decline speeds up.
You won’t feel it happening.
There’s no pain. No warning. No red flag.
Until a scan shows osteopenia. Or a small fall becomes a big problem.
By then, you’re playing catch-up.
Bones respond to load.
Not stretching.
Not steps.
Not supplements alone.
Load.
When you lift something challenging:
Muscles pull on bone.
Bone adapts.
Bone gets stronger.
If you don’t challenge it, your body assumes you don’t need it. And it slowly reduces it. That’s biology.
And before you say “I don’t want to get bulky.” You don’t accidentally get bulky. You accidentally lose bone.
The bigger risk isn’t lifting. It’s avoiding it.
What actually builds bone?
Squats
Deadlifts
Lunges
Pressing
Carrying heavy things
2–3 times per week. Progressively heavier over time.
Not random workouts. Not pink dumbbells forever. Not “just staying active.” Intentional strength.
Most of the women we work with want to:
Stay independent
Travel
Lift their kids, nieces, nephews, or grandkids
Keep hiking, running, training
Avoid becoming fragile
Strength training supports all of that.
This isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about capacity. It’s about owning your future instead of reacting to it.
At Formation, we don’t wait for a diagnosis. We build bone before it’s too late.
